Deck Building

There are 2 rules for building your deck:

  1. You must use exactly 7 Mon cards.*

  2. You can have no more than 2 copies of any one card.*

*Effects like Max and Passive may impact deckbuilding, see Card Effects.

Ways to Play

Winning

The game ends when no players have any cards left in their hands. The winner is determined as:

  1. The player with the most number of Mon (cards) in play.

  2. In case of a tie, the player with the highest combined Power (💥) of all their Mon. Players share the win if they are still tied.

Card Anatomy

  1. Power (💥): This is the Mon’s Power Level. Power can help the player win the battle!

  2. Name

  3. Cost (🔷): When a card is played, a player must discard a number of cards from their hand, equal to this value. If a player does not have enough cards to discard, the card played will be discarded after the Battle Effects.

  4. Type Symbol: Each Mon has one or more types: 🔥,💧,🌑, and🌿. Types provide no immediate effect, but some cards interact & synergize with certain types.

  5. Art

  6. Card Class: If a card is a Mon or Ultra Form Mon.

  7. Effects: The effect of the card, see Card Effects.

  8. Flavor Text: Lore about the card but with no in-game function.

  9. Card Set and Card Number: The card set name and the number of the card over the number of cards in the set.

Play Area

  • A: Play Area: Play cards in this area, new cards are played to the right.

  • B: Discard: Discarded cards go here. They are only interacted with when a card effect says so.

  • C: Hand: Hold your playable cards in your hand. Do not reveal to other players.

Gameplay

Start of Match

Players start with all 7 of their cards in their hand. Some Mon may have Passive abilities that take effect at the start of the game.

Rounds

Super Battle Mon is played in a series of rounds until all players are completely out of cards in their hands. Each round is broken into phases, each named for the effects that happen during that part of the round:

  1. Start of Round - Some effects may activate.

  2. Select - Players each select a card as their Main Play.

  3. Reveal - When all players are ready, all players reveal their selected cards simultaneously. Each player adds their Main Play to the right of their other cards.

  4. Pre-Battle - All players activate their card’s Pre-Battle effects.

  5. Battle - All players activate their card’s Battle effects.

  6. Cost -  Players pay the Cost (🔷) of their Mon by discarding the printed number of cards from their hand to their discard.

    • If they do not have enough cards to discard, the Mon will go into their discard pile from play.

  7. Ability - All player’s Mon that survived battle and whose Cost (🔷) were paid for may use their Ability effects.

  8. Compare - Compare Power by adding up the combined Power (💥) of all your cards in play.

  9. Winning or Losing the Round - The player with the most wins the round, all other players lose the round. In case of a tie for the most Power (💥), tied players don’t count as having won or lost.

  10. End of Round - Some effects may activate. The Round ends. Some effects may activate. Check if all players have no cards in their hand. If yes, determine the winner of the match. If not, begin a new round.

Card Effects

Abilities

If a card’s effect would ever conflict with a rule, follow the

card text; the effect overrules the rulebook.

  • Ability: These effects occur once, when the card enters play, after Pre-Battle, Battle, and paying Cost.

  • Action: Actions are effects that can be used once per game. You can activate them at any time during the step in their parentheses (i.e. during the Battle ability step). These effects do not reset unless specifically stated (i.e. flipping and unflipping or discarding the card does not allow it to use its Action again).

  • Battle: These effects occur once, before “Ability” effects and after the start of the round and Pre-Battle Phase.

  • Max: While normal rules only allow for a maximum of 2 copies of the same card to be used in a deck, some cards have this keyword that notes a different number of maximum copies that can be used.

  • Ongoing: These effects occur continuously while the Mon is in play and are applied before “Pre-Battle,” “Battle”, and “Ability” effects are considered to occur.

  • Passive: These abilities are considered to always be in effect, including when the card is in your hand or discard pile. Some take effect during certain phases as specified.

  • Pre-Battle: These effects occur once, before “Battle” effects after cards are revealed.

  • Rival: When more than one player’s Main Play has Rival, those Mon flip facedown before other effects occur.

  • Team: A Mon with Team # counts as that number of Mon being in play instead of the usual 1.

  • Value: Mon with Value keyword allows them to count as more or less than 1 card when being discarded to pay a Cost (🔷). The number of cards they are worth is written next to the Value keyword on their card.

  • (#🔥,💧,🌑, and🌿): Some effects only activate if your Mon in play have a combined number of symbols equal to or greater than those in the parenthesis. For example, an ability with (3🔥) would only activate if you have three Fire type symbols in play, including itself.

Keywords & Concepts

Effects with the same timing are considered to happen simultaneously. For example, a Mon forced to leave play may flip another Mon at the same time. In uncommon cases, effects may need to be ordered, such as if you must return a card to your hand while you are also forced to discard a card in the same phase. For cases like these, determine which effect occurs first at random.

  • Card: A card in your hand or discard pile.

  • Cost (🔷): The number of cards you must discard from your hand to play the card.

  • Discard: Cards go to your discard pile. Usually from your Hand or from In Play.

  • Extra: Cards with Extra are played in addition to your Main Play. They are added to the right of your in-game cards. They activate their effects based on the step they enter play- which may be Battle, Ability, etc. Before using their ability, you must immediately pay its Cost (🔷) or discard it if unable to, regardless of the phase it enters.

  • Flip: To turn a card, in play, face-down making it lose all its types, Power (💥), abilities, etc. Each flipped Mon still counts as a Mon in play for abilities and win conditions. Flipped cards cannot be flipped again, instead they can only be Unflipped.

  • Hand: The cards that you hold and where your Mon cards start the game.

  • In Play: Mon cards that have been played either as a Main Play or as an Extra.

  • Types: Are referred to using Symbols (🔥,💧,🌑, and🌿)

  • Main Play: The card each player selects from their Hand to add to play by revealing simultaneously.

  • Mon: A card in play.

  • Power (💥): The Power of a Mon (including all modifications from the abilities of other Mons).

  • Printed Power/Cost: This refers to the number on the card, regardless of any modifications to the value due to card abilities.

  • Remove from Play: This refers to cards leaving play by an effect. It may go to your hand, discard pile, or somewhere that is no longer in play.

  • Unflip: Can only target flipped cards, changing them from flipped (facedown) to faceup. An unflipped Mon regains all of its abilities, types, attributes, etc, but not any bonus (such as +💥, etc) given to it before it was flipped.

Rangers are an optional format and can be added to any game. Players select a Ranger card in addition to their cards. Each Player’s Ranger begins faceup in the Ranger Card spot in the Gameplay Area- it is not a Mon and is in its own zone, not part of the discard, hand, play, etc.
